Awards for All

Awards for All should now be easier to apply for. From November 2009, the Big Lottery has introduced some important changes to Awards for All. For details visit: www.awardsforall.org.uk

Big Lottery Fund – ‘Lighter-touch’ Reaching Communities

The Big Lottery Fund is introducing a “lighter-touch” Reaching Communities application process for organisations seeking grants of up to £40,000 a year. In response to its major public BIG Thinking consultation last year on the future of BIG programmes, the lottery distributor has made some changes to its flagship Reaching Communities programme.

All applicants will learn at an earlier stage whether their project has a decent chance of being funded, so that those that are invited to the second stage will have a much higher chance of success. More than three-quarters of people that responded to the consultation said they wanted earlier decisions on applications, based on a few key questions at the enquiry stage - even if that meant rejection; and those applicants seeking up to £40,000 will face a simpler application and assessment process.

In the pipeline to be launched in the autumn is a dedicated capital funding stream that BIG hopes will help to fill the “large, unmet demand” for funding for community buildings. This is anticipated to fund medium-sized refurbishment, new builds or extensions to community centres, village halls or other community-use buildings. In total the various parts of the Reaching Communities programme will be funded to the tune of at least £100m a year for each of the next five years. Grants will range from £10,000 to £500,000.

Capacity Builders update

Capacitybuilders announce £2m additional capital investment

Frontline third sector organisations are set to benefit from improved facilities at local resource centres across England thanks to an additional £2m of capital investment from the Office of the Third Sector.

It is an open programme, with online applications welcome from existing local resource centres including those which have previously had an application to the programme declined. To find out more about Strand A 2010 and apply online, please visit our website.

The application deadline to Phase Two of Capacitybuilders’ Modernisation Fund Grants Programme has now closed, with over 600 Phase One bursary holders submitting applications. Capacitybuilders expects to make up to 500 grant awards by the end of the year.

Phase One of the programme enabled frontline third sector organisations to explore the benefits of collaboration and merger as a means of becoming more resilient in the face of the economic downturn. Phase Two: Grow Together, will award grants of up to £10,000 to organisations who received support under Phase One to progress their plans for collaboration or merger.

Any not-for-profit organisation working with children and young people under the age of 18 can apply, with some exclusions such as projects carrying out medical research or promoting religion. Decisions are expected to be made within 14 weeks of the closing date of each round.

Funding will be allocated at local level through seven regional UK bases in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The fund will be administered by the RCC (Rural Community Council for Leicestershire and Rutland) as part of its Communities Cutting Carbon project, which seeks to support community groups to take environmental action in their local area.
The funding is available thanks to the support of the East Midlands Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership (RIEP) and each of the local authorities in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
Community groups can bid for any amount from £200 to £5000. Some examples of activities that could be funded are:

The European Commission launches the Youth in Action (YiA) call for 2010

The Youth in Action Programme aims to promote active citizenship, solidarity and tolerance among young people in Europe. Youth in Action is made up of five different strands including:

Action 1: Youth for Europe aims to help youth groups experience other cultures mainly through transnational exchanges
Action 2: European Voluntary Service supports young people's participation in various forms of voluntary activities
Action 3: Youth in the World gives young people and those active in the field of youth policy an opportunity to gain work experience in non-EU countries
Action 4: Youth Support Systems helps youth workers to develop and share best practice across all of the programme’s actions
Action 5: Support for European Cooperation aims to contribute to the promotion of European co-operation across Europe in the youth field

The 2010 Programme priorities for this year’s call are as follows:

  • European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. This priority is intended to support projects aimed at raising young people's awareness in tackling poverty and marginalisation as well as promoting social inclusion.
  • Within this context, particular attention will be paid to projects promoting exchange of experiences between young people with and without disabilities that focus on how disability is represented in our society; and young people from migrant backgrounds or ethnic, religious or linguistic minorities such as the Roma community.
  • Youth unemployment and promotion of their young people’s active participation in the labour market.
  • Awareness raising and exchange of views of young people around global challenges (such as sustainable development, climate change, migration and the Millennium Development Goals).

Projects addressing the above priorities are therefore encouraged and these priorities should be reflected in the project proposal. There are a number of deadlines for projects to be submitted to the National Agency depending on the start date of the project. Partners who are interested in the Youth in Action Programme should contact Marie Diop at EMEO for more information.
